Our study aims to extend the above mentioned research by understanding how particular social groups might perceive transgender individuals. Insight on students’ attitudes towards transgender individuals is important when considering the safety and welfare of transgender students. Positive relationships, especially intimate ones, can have an extremely positive impact on one’s gender (Devor, 2004). Gender and race influence attitudes toward LGBT individuals because of cultural understandings of gender roles (Negy & Eisenman, 2005) (Kimmel, 1994; Pascoe, 2007). This study aims to provide insight into the way that social groups, specifically one’s area of study in college, contribute to attitudes towards LGBT people. The results from this study will inform progress and efforts toward creating more beneficial social climate for transgender students on campus.
